You've heard of man cave, right? Well we are
building cat caves! The goal is to get our 5 cats out of the garage /
shop and our 5 cats out of the house and into an enclosed outside area
for too many reasons to list here! At the top of the list are damage to
birds and other wildlife, constant de-worming we have to do because of
the things they eat, and expense of litter and medicine, and the
constant clean-up required. Not to mention that we have some feral cats
that we cannot take care of because some of our homebodies run them off
before they can get any food.
We
are building 3 pens. The first is for the “garage cats”. Today we
were outside by 8 a.m., and we finished putting the last tall post in by
5 p.m. The enclosed area will run the width of garage plus an 8
section so that they can lay in the sun – it will be 73’ long, about
10.5 feet tall, and about 20 feet wide. They will have a cat door we
cut in the side of the garage where they can go in and out. Their
enclosure will include bamboo, many Leyland cypresses and one oak. We
will cover this with farm fencing, up to the 10.5 foot height of the
posts.
Attached is a picture of Gordon after we had put in the 3rd post. This post will be for a very tall gate, but only about 4 foot wide.
This is looking down the same end …
This is the other end. Fencing will run from the far left post to the
post at the garage building. You can see the bamboo in the foreground.
The two right posts are for the other very tall gate, which is 6 foot
wide so that I can get the mower in it.
This is a picture of the THIRD of the three cat
caves. This one is just for Rucky, who you can see sitting in the
window if you look closely.
The
little stakes mark where our next big posts will go, although we are
missing the gate post. He will have a cat door cut into this side of
the shop that lets him go in and out. His cage will be only 8 feet
tall, and about 24 feet long. He has bamboo down at the end.
The
SECOND cage is for the house cats. It will be a dandy, but we will not
start on that one until the first is finished. The house cats will
include the area under the deck which is always a favorite place in the
hot summer, and it will be very big.
